Brain shrinkage occurs with ageing and has been shown to predict the decline of mental functions such as memory, executive function and speed of information processing [1]. Cognitive impairment resulting from loss of brain tissue and loss of neuronal excitation can progress to Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and dementia. Thus there is a challenge to find ways to maintain brain health before these processes affect cognitive function and functional independence. Certain vitamins have gained attention in the promise of protecting neuronal integrity and slowing brain shrinkage including omega-3, vitamin B12, folic acid, vitamin D and anti-oxidants such as vitamins C and E. A recent study in an ageing cohort showed that a nutrient biomarker profile high in plasma marine ω-3 fatty acids was associated with positive cognitive and MRI outcomes [2]. Another biomarker profile high in plasma vitamins B (B1, B2, B6, folate, and B12), C, D, and E was also associated with more favourable cognitive and MRI measures, while a profile characterised by high trans-fats was less favourable.

B Vitamins and the Brain: Mechanisms, Dose and Efficacy—A Review
The B-vitamins comprise a group of eight water soluble vitamins that perform essential, closely inter-related roles in cellular functioning, acting as co-enzymes in a vast array of catabolic and anabolic enzymatic reactions. Their collective effects are particularly prevalent to numerous aspects of brain function, including energy production, DNA/RNA synthesis/repair, genomic and non-genomic me...
متن کاملB Vitamins Supplement Potentiates Antiparkinsonian Effect of Flunarizine: the Behavioral and Biochemical Evidences From 6-Hydroxydopamine Animal Model
Introduction: Prominent data indicate that flunarizine (flu), a calcium channel blocker, has neuroprotective effect. However, several authors have reported that the chronic use of flu can produce drug-induced Parkinsonism. Previously, we showed that B vitamins supplement (B com) has antiparkinsonian effect. In the present study, we evaluated the effect of pretreatment with flu ...

Depression, as a mental disorder, affects more than 300 million people of all ages every year. It is said to be associated with neuroinflammation. Depression has affected women more than men. Over the world, people are disabled due to depression rather than any other condition. Neuroinflammation is the brain’s reaction to injury. Apparently there is a link between neuroinflammation and de...

Introduction: Studies suggest that ATP-sensitive potassium (KATP) channels are a potential pharmacotherapeutic target for neuroprotection in neurodegenerative diseases. The current study aimed at evaluating the effect of pretreatment with glibenclamide (Glib) and B vitamins supplement on the severity of behavioral symptoms in 6-hydroxydopamine (OHDA)-induced Parkinsonism. Also malondialdehyde (...
